A Two Pipe Problem

Just of the press and into Luna & Curious is a new range of cards and prints by letterpress studio A Two Pipe Problem based in Walthamstow.

All of the items are designed directly on the press - either the 1930s Stephenson Blake proofing press, the larger 1940s Farley or Adana - using nothing but old wooden blocks and metal type.

Old wooden type that is damaged or worn and inking pressures and temperatures results in no two posters being the same. This is all the charm of letterpress printing.

Sometimes in the world of fashion and design, life is always rushing forward, constantly looking for something new, another season or another collection. As we hurtle into Christmas, 2011's London Design Festival seems to be a distant memory. This is why it was so refreshing to read this article in Dwell magazine about The Living Room exhibition curated by Alyn Griffiths and Jonathan Krawczuk and hosted by Luna & Curious.

"For all the British design on display at the festival, nothing truly hit home -or recreated it- better than the Living Room, a stylishly cozy collection of English goods"

So perhaps it is time that we had a quick pause and took stock of all that we have seen, learnt and done this year and be proud of our achievements - if only we all had living rooms as beautiful as the one that Jonathan & Alyn created in which to do this.

CABINET: Menswear pop-up at Luna & Curious

Cabinet comes to Luna & Curious tomorrow for three whole weeks.

Cabinet is a new online menswear store based in Shoreditch created by Tim Yates. The store originally started with an obsession with finding the perfect fitting shirt in London and not being able to do so.

Cabinet stocks own label pieces along with a growing number of niche independent labels that are clean, simple and contemporary to suit the modern style conscious man.

A pop-up store will be opening in Shoreditch to launch the label and will showcase all of the pieces that are sold online. Key to the collection are simple, slim-fitting shirts from Italian shirt-maker Mastai Ferretti. Predominantly with semi-cutaway and cutaway collars the shirts come in crisp whites, blues, gingham checks and stripes. Seasonal pieces include linen shirts with rounded collars and casual striped button-downs.

Also stocked are canvas bags from American brand Makr. These heavyweight tote and

weekender bags come in khaki, grey and navy.

The latest addition to the range are Cabinet’s own casual trousers, which are designed with an English feel and an Italian fit. Made entirely in England the trousers are lightweight and slim with a tapered leg and come in bright olive green, french navy and neutral.

Last night Rock Lobsta launched its pop-up lobster roll bar in Luna & Curious' annexe space. As people devoured the Shoreditch Splitter and the Hackney roll, they also got the chance to see the brilliant "lobsta" themed products in the Luna & Curious store. Sea creature bags by Larissa Hadjio, Tatty Devine lobster necklaces and Amanda Fatherazi jewels are just a few of the highlights.

We launched Paperself's new eyelash range, a collaboration with the DJ duo, The Broken Hearts, who we were honoured to have as guests for the opening night. Paperself also came to demonstrate how to wear the lovely lashes, so we were all fluttering our eyelids by the end of the evening.

Rise Art is an online social community where anyone can discover, share and purchase unique artwork from rising talent around the globe. This month, they have taken over the gallery and have invited Rise Art Selected Artist Dai Roberts to create a room installation that transforms his modernist-inspired screen prints into a spacial experience allowing the viewer to 'wander' inside his artistic universe.

In addition, Rise Art will also showcase limited-edition prints by artists Pedro Guimaraes and Ting-Ting Cheng, two photographers chosen by Rise Art’s board of curators as Select Artists with a fascinating take on travel and still-life photography.

Rise Art is also giving away a £100 gift voucher to the visitor that can write the best micro-review on Dai’s UNIT installation which, along other contributions, will be published and shared on the site.

The spectacular 125 Magazine is the latest to show their work at the Luna & Curious gallery.

The exhibition includes favourite prints from past issues featuring work by Perry Curties, Roy Wilkinson, Finlay Mackay, Klaus Thymann and many more.

Plus a selection of back issues are available for just £5.

Prints are for sale at £250 framed and £200 unframed.

The exhibition continues until 31st March 2011.

Established in 2003 as an independent showcase for new work and ideas by image makers around the world, 125 is a unique 'galleryspace-in-print' for established and emerging photographers, illustrators and stylists to produce exciting new work that would not be viable in more conventional publications.

To celebrate the rejuvination of our shop from a former squat , we are showing Gavin Parry's Amos Estate series, photographs of a squatting community form Rotherhithe SE16, taken in the mid 1980s, and shot over a period of 2 years.

Amos Estate was built for dockworkers and their families during the 1930s by the river Thames. For five years in the 1980s the estate was subject to a dispute over ownership which left flats either vandalized, stripped for scrap or utilized by squatters.

These portraits are a small selection, chosen in celebration of the place, the time and, above all, the people who were part of this diverse, warm and dynamic community.

After 25 years of regeneration, development and the patina of time and progress, these photos do what photographs are so good at… becoming historical glimpses into a time and place now gone. However like all good photographs, it is hoped that the portraits also convey a warmth and intimacy that transcends time and connects with immediacy and contemporary insights.

Luna & Curious is proud to announce their move from Brick Lane to their larger space on Calvert Avenue by Arnold Circus, Shoreditch.

The new store is part of the Boundary Estate - one of the first council housing schemes in the world. Luna & Curious has taken over a once squatted in building and has lovingly restored the space with their unique signature style whilst celebrating it's original Victorian features. Beautiful traditional floor tiles accentuate the contemporary gallery space; an original cast iron central heating system sits curiously in the corner, for the inquisitive customer there lies a hidden treasure each month! The curious theme continues throughout the store with translucent white umbrella sculptures swinging from the ceilings and stuffed creatures peering down from the walls.

The larger shop has allowed room for more exciting new designers to showcase their work including beautiful hand embroidered jewellery by Jennie Sharman Cox, hand knitted baby clothes by the Miniature Knit Shop and stuffed animals by Finch; as well as the old favourites from the three owners; jewellery by Rheanna Lingham and handmade bone china tableware by Polly George and welovekaoru. Not forgetting the bestsellers: paper eyelashes by Paperself, darkly humorous jewellery by momocreatura and handprinted tights by Les Queues de Sardines.

Luna & Curious also offers the opportunity for the gallery space to be hired and curated by the three founders, Rheanna Lingham, Polly George and Kaoru Parry.

The current exhibition in the gallery is The Amos Estate - Photographs of a squatting community form Rotherhithe SE16, taken in the mid 1980’s by photographer Gavin Parry. Click here to see his work.

To celebrate the opening of our new store, we are hosting a Grand Opening Party on Saturday 5th February 2011, from 1pm.

The celebrations will begin with a marching band, meeting outside our old shop on Brick Lane and marching up Brick Lane, along Redchurch Street, to the bandstand at Arnold Circus and then to the new shop, where the party will continue.

The march is open to all - please pick up a trumpet, drum or wooden spoon and biscuit tin.

We will be hosting an evening of mulled wine and christmas nibbles on
Thursday 16th December from 5pm - 8pm.

We would love for you all to see our new space and have a sneak preview before the grand reopening early next year.

We have a wonderful array of exciting new products to show you, including wonderful stuffed characters by Finch, knitted fancy dress for toddlers and exquisitely embroidered necklaces.
